Following the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11th, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation was created with a mission to Never Forget. This foundation supports Gold Star families, first responders, and injured and homeless veterans.
Every year, the organization hosts a Tunnel to Towers 5K Run and Walk in New York City. This is a heartfelt event that pays tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of first responders during the tragic events of 9/11. The run symbolizes firefighter Stephen Siller’s final footsteps, as he heroically strapped on 60 lbs. of gear and ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to reach the World Trade Center on that fateful day. Participants walk or run together on the same route, symbolizing Stephen’s selflessness, determination, and ultimate sacrifice.
This event not only honors the memory of Stephen Siller, but also serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and unity displayed by countless heroes on 9/11. Beyond its commemorative significance, the run raises funds for the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation to provide mortgage-free homes to the families of fallen heroes. It’s an event that embodies the spirit of remembrance, community, and unwavering support for those who serve and protect us.
Shout out to our GYL team member, Tara Regan, who laced up her running shoes and participated in the Tunnel to Towers Run on Saturday! Tara’s father is a volunteer fireman, and her family has enjoyed participating in Tunnel to Towers for several years. Tara looks forward to continuing this tradition and supporting this cause that means so much to her family. Thank you, Tara Regan, for running with purpose and making us proud!
